The Technological Challenge

The story of the 20th century was the triumph of liberalism, but that story is now in crisis. The primary reason is that technology is beginning to outpace our political and social structures. The twin revolutions in information technology and biotechnology are creating unprecedented challenges. I argue that artificial intelligence and automation could soon create a 'useless class' of people whose economic skills are obsolete, leading to massive social upheaval. We are handing over immense authority to algorithms, from what we buy to who we date, without fully understanding the consequences.

Furthermore, these technologies are undermining the very idea of human free will, a cornerstone of liberal democracy. If corporations and governments can hack human beings—understanding our biological and psychological triggers better than we understand them ourselves—then the concept of individual choice becomes a fiction. We are at a crossroads where we must decide how to regulate these powerful new tools. If we fail, we risk not just economic disruption, but the creation of digital dictatorships far more oppressive than anything seen before. The challenge is to reinvent our institutions before the algorithm does it for us.
