Atomic Habits

Make It Obvious

To build a good habit, you must first make the cue as obvious as possible. This means designing your environment to increase the visibility of cues for your desired behaviors. Think about where you file your "gym clothes" the night before, or placing your book on your pillow. Conversely, to break a bad habit, you must make the cue invisible. Confiscate the remote control if you watch too much TV, or move your smartphone out of your bedroom if you find yourself scrolling endlessly. It's about manipulating your surroundings so that the path of least resistance leads to the outcomes you desire. Remember, your habits are not a reflection of who you are, but rather the systems you have in place. By controlling the cues, you control the initial trigger for the habit loop, setting yourself up for success.
